My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Lisbon In Lisbon Again The Military Museum

The Military Museum

September 11, 2014
[...]

The Lisbon Military Museum of Lisbon has one of the World's biggest collection of ancient guns and other weapons.
It also holds Vasgo da Gama's sword!

So, I took the metro down to the Santa Apolonia metro station and visited the Museu Militar de Lisboa.

(Actually, the Portuguese National Pantheon found further uphill was my first target and, afterwards I walked down to this museum).

The museum is now found inside a building near Rio Tejo. From what they told me at the museum, the building has 36 rooms in total - some of which are beautiful Baroque-decorated.

While visiting the museum, I was indeed impressed by the rich collection of exposed old weapons, I admired the beautifully decorated rooms and I also loved the azulejo tile-decorated interior yard - where a collection of ancient cannons are lined up all around.

All of them have thick green patina on them (due to their rich copper content).

And the ancient green cannons look so good with the blue azulejos!

Speaking of azulejos, I recommend you check my article about my visit to the Azulejo Museum.

The military museum overall was one of the most beautiful attractions I've seen during this trip. Worth visiting, not only for men...

It's not just weaponry, but beautiful murals in some halls, the Baroque interiors and the mentioned azulejos.

Old ship cannons

Heavy cannons. Some of which were used on old battleships.
These are huge - much longer than a large bed (for comparison).

Large cannons

Various cannons here have belonged to various nations... Portuguese, English, Spanish cannons...
