My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Sintra Day Trip to Sintra The National Palace and [...]
The National Palace and Other Nice Buildings in Sintra
The National Palace is among the top 5 attractions of Sintra. Probably it would make it into the top 3 as well.
This is one of the strangest buildings I've seen in Portugal. Unique design. Don't miss out on it!
Besides the National Palace, I would like to emphasize on other beautiful buildings found in Sintra.
Despite the small size of this town, it has an impressive collection of beautiful palaces, houses...
Let's see some info and photos of the National Palace and then I'll list a number of photos of the other places...

The Sintra National Palace is also known as the Town Palace and it's Portugal's most well-preserved Royal Palace.
Most often, it's simply referred to as "National Palace".
Don't confuse it with the Pena National Palace, most-often referred to as "Pena Palace".
It was inhabited almost without any interruption between the 15th and 19th centuries.
Expect crowds when visiting it

The building has a long history, dating back to the 10th century (Moorish period), but this building was constructed in the 15th century with various annexes and modifications happening along the centuries.
Architecturally, it is a mixture of Moorish, Gothic, Manueline styles.
It is one of the most beautiful attractions of Sintra, but it closes early.
Now, let's move on to the rest...
To the left, you can see a rather unusual coat of arms depicting the crescents (borrowed from islamic symbols).
It was on the walls of a reddish palace - the Palácio Valenças.
It was tiring and confusing getting around in Sintra after having descended from the fortress.
Other nice places, beautiful buildings worth mentioning are photographed below...
