My Escapes Spain Costa Blanca Summer Heat Alicante Alluring Alicante Trip Playa de San Juan Impressions

Playa de San Juan Impressions

December 26, 2014
July 24, 2015

After having been to El Postiguet, the San Juan Beach in northern Alicante felt a lot below by many terms.
Although the scenery was beautiful, there was less life on the beach and the neighbourhoods around has a ghost town-ish feel.
But, if you're yearning for a quiet beach, then this can be the right for you.

Initially, I expected a lot from this huge strip of sandy beach.
I saw it on the map and I thought to myself, this would be the leading beach of Alicante. Fun and sun, ladies with aerodynamic design, lots of bars and clubs... but no, I was wrong.

Postiguet, on the other hand was overcrowded and fabulous. I reckoned, many people would come to this bigger beach.

But there were surprisingly few people around and on one particular day I could walk at least a mile and not see anyone.

Of course, if you want more space, more privacy, you could enjoy your time at San Juan.

As I explained here, this is Alicante's vast northern beach and the sandy strip faces north. Meaning, the Sun rises from right hand's side, if you stand towards the water.

The Playa de San Juan has a length of 6.3 km (3.91 mi), a width that even exceeds 110 m.

This beach somewhat reminded me of my earlier Valencia beach walk.
That particular beach was roughly half this long, but had a maximum width exceeding 170 m.

Playa de San Juan had clean fine sand, but with a lot more chells and chunks of shells than Postiguet or Valencia's beach.

I saw marked areas and even lifeguards attracting the attention of swimmers to avoid certain segments for swimming.
There are dangerous currents and I felt like the waves occasionally hit me with tremendous force.

The water... as cold as ice.

What's great is that hotels can get very cheap in the Cabo de Las Huertas area.
Obviously, there's less demand, so prices drop.

As a matter a fact, it felt ghost townish. Barren, but still a nice place for walking around.

Playa de San Juan beach walk

Some jog along the beach. There is a harder wet sand pad between the waves and the dry sand. If you walk on that stretch, you can walk faster, without exhaustiong your muscles.

Speaking of walking around... I did the "beach hike". A refreshing experience. I walked 12-14 km from one edge of the beach strip 'till the inland end.

Tiring, yes. But a wonderful experience.

Benidorm in the distance

Benidorm can faintly be seen very far away between the mountains. My next destination after Cabo.

A long barefoot walk on the beach is refreshing.
The sand massages your feet, the sound of the waves is calming and the clean salty air is also believe to have health benefits.

I experienced various sides of this beach and the verdict is: it's a great place, especially for those seeking a quieter place.

When the big crowds leave, I noticed the lifeguards' also leave
