Escape Hunter Gear

Gear - My Travel Equipment

December 30, 2012
October 23, 2014

Being well-equipped is extremely important for travelers. If a vital accessory is missing, even your dream trip can be ruined...
However, it's the experiences that will bring joy, not the objects!

No, travel equipment is not just about luggage and "special gear" for professional hikers. This includes way more to pay attention to...

Imagine a torn shoestring while on a trek or your phone battery dead just when you really need to call someone and there's no other means of communication...

Additionally: the purpose of the trip, the climate and the environment in means specific adequate equipment. Sometimes you would not have believed what you should have taken with you - and when you reckon, it's generally too late!

My Travel Gear

Part of my travel equipment I've been using for years and have taken with me around the World.
Of course, as technology evolves, I need to modernize my inventory, but I tend to be faithful to a camera for 3-4 years.

Overall, I don't think there's anything "fancy" about my equipment, but here it is... past and present travel gear...

Digital Photo Cameras

Canon EOS 400D DSLR (mid-2008 to early 2012)
Sony DSC-P93 compact (from mid-2008)
Nikon Coolpix S3000 compact (from late 2010)
Nikon D5100 DSLR (from early 2012)

Naturally, as someone passionate about photography, I can't leave anywhere without my DSLR camera.
Currently it's the Nikon D5100 that's doing the job. And it's doing it impressively well!

I've been using the Nikon D5100 since mid-2012 and its performance surpasses the earlier Canon EOS 400D by far.
The only downsides of my latest camera are: noisier shutter and due to the bigger lens it's larger and heavier (it isn't easy finding a good bag for it).

Bags, Luggage

I use backpacks and roller bags as well.

About a decade ago, I've was a fan of large backpacks, but I have recently become more inclined towards wheel bags...

I almost always carry a smaller backpack with me - which serves as my daypack. It's good to be light and comfortable.
Since 2008, I've been using a Dicota laptop bag, then in mid-2014 I bought myself an Everki Flight 16" model.
The new Everki bag is especially comfortable, has better rain resistance and I love its interior. Although, it's heavier than my previous Dicota backpack and its surface is also more sensitive to scratches, it's a great accessory.

As for my roller bags: I own 3 sizes. A smaller one (Delsey), a medium one (Sonada) and my ultra-light large Samsonite on 4 wheels.

In recent years, I've completely adapted to the use of roller bags and I've totally given up carrying large backpacks.

Why carry when you can leave it on the ground?

Why lift the heavy weight up when you can drag it and push it on its own wheels?

I hope one day they'll invent bags on which we can sit and drive our way to and from airports.
On my long bag-dragging and bag-lifting days, this was a recurring fantasy: bags on which we can sit and drive.

Laptops, Netbooks

Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa2510 laptop (since August 2008)
Acer Aspire One D250-1Bk netbook (2009-mid 2012)
Lenovo G505 laptop (since August 2014)

The Amilo Pa2510 is such a powerful machine that I've even used as an office computer. But carrying it on trips was dreadfully tiring, exhausting. 2.75 kg is just too heavy.

I needed a much lighter computer that could satisfy my basic needs during a trip. Therefore, I bought the Acer Aspire 250 netbook, which only weighs 1.27 kg. But I still find this too heavy. Will update you when I'll swap for a newer, lighter netbook.
I adored the small Acer Aspire netbook. Its battery lasted for 5,5 hours, while the large Amilo could only function for just over 2 hours.
Unfortunately, during my 2013 Alicante flight, it broke! I put a very cold bottle of water in my backpack and the cold-induced precipitation of tiny water drops have put an end to my tiny machine. Even though the water bottle was never opened, a huge amount of water drop fall-out was created (inside the backpack) during roughly an hour while boarding!
Of course, I was able to get it repaired.

Recently, I bought a new large laptop - a Lenovo G505, which serves as a replacement for my Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo Pa2510, which started having serious functionality issues.
This one is lighter with its 2.6 kg, but far more powerful and with a more comfy keyboard.

I have completely given up using a desktop computer.

Other Gadgets, Handy Traveler's Items

I don't leave anywhere without my gadgets and other accessories, which I consider vital for being able to enjoy my trips.
Here are some of them:

Water heater: practical for making hot tea, coffee and soups, instant noodles in the hotel room... I don't always eat at a restaurant and it's always pleasant to drink a warm tea

Pocket knife: one of the most handy and most multifunctional tools is my Victorinox Swiss army knife - some laugh at me, because I bring it with me almost everywhere...

Smartphone: I use a Samsung Galaxy i9000 - its camera is much better than my compact digital cameras for close-up photos (good colours and sharp image)

Converter plug: there are so many plugs in the World... but this little gadget does its job all the time!
