My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Porto Exploring Vintage Porto Gliding Across Portugal [...]

Gliding Across Portugal Aboard the Alpha Pendular

September 11, 2014
[...]

I've traveled with the Shinkansen in Japan, tried the Frecciarossa in Italy and it was time to see how the Portuguese high-speed train rides!
It glides...
Smooth and very comfortable ride aboard the Alpha Pendular train took little over 3 hours from Lisbon to Porto!

I took the Alpha train for the sake of experience. Although cheaper alternatives were available, I didn't want to miss the experience.

I departed from Lisboa Oriente, the roughly 3 hour glide took me to Porto Campanhã.

The Alpha train rode at speeds above 240 km/h, as according to the LCD display.

Very smooth ride, which seemed more comfortable than my experience with the Italian Frecciarossa (between Rome and Naples).

The Alpha was clean, a lot of room for your feet and your elbows, it's a fantastic comfy train!

The only two downsides: no toilets and terrible WiFi connection (although I should appreciate the mere existence of it!).

I didn't find any toilets in the train. At least in mine, there were no toilets.

The landscape was just a little bit interesting. A few nice hills, a few nice buildings, but overall quite boring.

The Alpha is the Portuguese Shinkansen and it's a good choice for long-distance land-based transportation in the country.
