My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Aveiro Aveiro Day Trip Strolling Along Aveiro's Main Avenue

Strolling Along Aveiro's Main Avenue

September 11, 2014
[...]

As I stepped out of the modern railway station building, rain was pouring down on Aveiro and No bus was coming...
I put my compact ultra light rain jacket on and proceeded to walk by foot.

Aveiro has a long straight main avenue that leads right to the old centre.

The Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho is roughly 1.1 km (0.68 mi) long.

It required 50-60 minutes to walk down all the way from the train station to the roundabout that runs across the main water channel.

This place is the Praça General Humberto Delgado.

The Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho required a long walk, but it wasn't boring at all.

There are lots of interesting buildings and I was stunned by the large number of Art Deco representatives.

Art Deco is more popular in the USA, some countries in Europe barely have buildings constructed in the respective style.

But, Aveiro has plenty of these...

Quite strange to mention though, that the first Art Deco building that I recall noticing in Portugal was actually a small house at Costa da Caparica.

This Aveiro day trip and the Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia escapes gave me the opportunity to discover lots of Art Deco buildings.

Sadly, a large number of buildings are in a terrible state of decay.

I know that decay can also be beautiful, but not when a fantastic old artwork looks like dying.

In case you get hungry, there are several cafés around and as you start approaching the old centre, you'll notice more and more restaurants.

Supermarkets like the Mini Preço are cheap alternatives for buying food and drinks.

It's always cheaper to buy your food there than at any restaurant.

Although on this page I'll only depict several buildings, do note that there are plenty more.

For someone who loves architecture, walking down the main avenue will be a delightful experience. So, I enjoyed it quite a lot.

But then again, it depends on what you'd like to get out from your Aveiro trip...

If you'd head straight for the old town, then check my page about the historic centre of Aveiro. With photos and suggestions on street names to visit.

Enjoy my photos of Avenida Dr. Lourenço Peixinho below...

Communist party building in Aveiro, Portugal

The "commies" have a beautiful old building as their headquarters. By the way, communism is legal in Portugal.
But, communism is totally illegal as ideology in Bulgaria. And, while ideologically not illegal, the "hammer and sickle" and the "red star" are forbidden by law in Hungary.
