My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Porto Exploring Vintage Porto Porto's Heritage Trams

Porto's Heritage Trams

September 11, 2014
April 29, 2015

Riding a 100-year old tram was an adventure I didn't want to miss, so I embarked on a trip back in time in beautiful vintage Porto...
Rough ride on a rigid old vehicle... trip slow enough for me to contemplate the views around.

This time I had the time to compensate for missing the opportunity of riding an old tram in Lisbon.

As opposed to Lisbon, Porto operates vintage trams exclusively.

Some of these are probably around 100 years old. And they're still fully functional!

Porto's tram network was electrified in 1895, until then, they were mostly horse-driven, others steam-propelled.

To be honest, Porto's heritage trams looked a lot better than Lisbon's. To my taste, at least.

Plus, the vintage feel is stronger due to their brown colour.

I paid 2.5 EUR for a single ride and in the end I felt like it was worth every cent.

Tickets can be bought on board, but some hotels and travel agents also sell them.

I embarked tram 22 at Batalha, which traveled across Porto like an iron rhinoceros without soft suspensions, but also without high speed.

This was an experience like none other that I've had before and I'd love to repeat it even right now!

There are 3 lines: 1, 18 and 22.

For the best city sightseeing experience, I recommend taking tram 22. It has the biggest number of stations and it goes in circle in the central area, passing many beautiful attractions by.

If you're very passionate about these trams, I recommend you visiting the Tram Museum in Massarelos.

Find it at Alameda Basílio Teles 51.

Nevertheless, these vehicles are part of the "ingredients" that attribute Porto a unique vintage feel.

But besides trams, in Porto you can also spot beautiful river boats on the Douro.
