My Escapes Portugal Another Lovely Trip to Portugal! Estoril Estoril Walkaround Estoril's Cute Little Fortresses
Estoril's Cute Little Fortresses
My greatest surprise at Estoril was encountering a profusion of small, but serious fortifications, which guard the coastline.
Yes, they're all real, genuine, historic, old fortresses... Not modern imitations.
Yet another reason for visiting Estoril: seeing the mini fortresses, which you can pin on your map and look up one-by-one when you're there...
Some of them are so small - I think they could only protect a villa size area.

If you have annoying neighbours (which most of us have!), you should be thinking about more protection. How about building a wall around?
Take my advice, take a short stroll around, it is worth. A paper map of Estoril might show you exactly where they are located.

The Cruz Fort is iconic - it's the fortress that's visible at Tamariz Beach. Iconic to Estoril
It was bought by a rich man called João Martins de Barra in 1894, but presumably it's a lot older.
My guess is, the building has undergone style modifications - therefore the current look.

There were several others along the coast and you'll find some in the Cascais area as well.
As I was nearing Estoril, we passed several beautiful ones by. But as I have researched, they're not located within Estoril.
If you'd seriously want to explore and visit all small forts in the area, then take your time. There are more than a dozen, perhaps two times that much (but only a few are attractive to the eye).
Whatever happens, don't miss the the big fortress in Cascais either.
