My Escapes Spain Barcelona Exploring Gaudí's Sprawling Surreal Barcelona Barcelona, the Art Paradise

Barcelona, the Art Paradise

December 6, 2013
July 5, 2014

Barcelona boasts full of art...
From architecture to Picasso's painting and Salvador Dalí's artwork, but Gaudí's architectural creations are iconic to the city...

I'm fanatic about architecture, design and art in general - so, metaphorically speaking, to me Barcelona was like a fish market to a starving cat!

Take my advice, don't rush it...
But take a deep immersion into art during your stay in Barcelona... This is what I did and I just couldn't get enough of it!

Eventually, I developed an insatiable hunger for the Catalan capital and not even my first 3 trips there could satisfy my passion and curiosity!

Hereunder I am depicting several of the major art-related hotspots in Barcelona.

Of course, this page depicts my first trip's experience only...

Architecture: Art Nouveau and Modernism

If there's one main reason for visiting Barcelona, then it's for the sake of its architecture!

Barcelona boasts with Art Nouveau and Modernist buildings.

Antoni Gaudí, Lluís Domènech i Montaner and Josep Maria Jujol Gibert are the top local architects. Dozens of their buildings are scattered in and around Barcelona.

The top 10 architectural attractions of Barcelona:

Casa Fuster - by Montaner
Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau - by Montaner
Casa Vicens - by Gaudí
Finca Güell - by Gaudí
Güell Park - by Gaudí
Palau Güell (Güell Palace) - by Gaudí
Palau de la Música Catalana - by Montaner
Sagrada Família Church - by Gaudí
Casa Milà - by Gaudí and Jujol
Casa Batlló - by Gaudí and Jujol

Visual Arts: Paintings, Statues, etc.

Of course, I didn't have the time to visit all of these, but you mustn't leave the first 4 out.

I waited in the longest line (2 hours waiting time!) when at the Picasso Museum... it's also hard to find, a bit deep in the old quarters behind the Gothic Quarter.

The top 7 art museums of Barcelona:

Salvador Dalí Museum - small museum containing artwork by Salvador Dalí
Joan Miró Foundation - quite large museum, full of Miró artwork
Picasso Museum - rich collection with famous works by the artist
Catalan National Museum of Art - hosts temporary, but also permanent exhibitions
Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art (MACBA) - mixed modern art museum
CaixaForum Barcelona - mixed modern art museum
Ceramics Museum - hosted by the Palau Reial de Pedralbes (Pedralbes Royal Palace)

Music

Of course, there are lots and lots of venues, old and modern, but top of the line can be none other than the Palau de la Música Catalana - undoubtedly Catalan architect L. D. Montaner's most beautiful building (and it's the interior main room that's really breathtaking!).
The Palace of Catalan Music hosts elegant music events.
