My Escapes Spain Barcelona Exploring Gaudí's Sprawling Surreal Barcelona Plaça de Catalunya Area
Plaça de Catalunya Area
Plaça de Catalunya in Catalan or, Plaza de Cataluña in Spanish is a major square in central Barcelona. A reference point and meeting spot of many travelers.
I used this "uban transportation knot" to reach various places in the city, because subway lines and many main roads meet here. It's sort-of "the main square" of the city.
Not many cities have a main square as beautiful as this one. I photographed the buildings around - I was particularly impressed by what I saw there.
You too can use this place as your starting point in order to reach points of interest in the entire Barcelona.

There's a huge water fountain at the center, as well as some statues, monuments. It's a place where pigeons flock to be fed... you might say it's like a tiny park-like area.
The water fountain wasn't working and I never actually met anyone who saw it working. I guess it's "dead"...
Dried out water fountain... pigeons seem to love it!

The main shopping centres are located here and nearby, the Barri Gòtic, La Rambla, El Raval, Passeig de Gràcia areas, which can easily be accessed from here - all just a very short walk away!
For shopping, I'd mention the Portal del Angel Street, which is also scenic for looking around (it has some of the highest prices per square kilometer for sale/rent - businesses there will also tax the buyers more).
On right hand side of the Portal del Angel you will find the old Corte Inglés shopping centre building.
It's a department store with various stores. I saw mostly clothing and sports goods.
The new Corte Inglés (shopping mall) is a massive grey building in the Plaça de Catalunya.

The department store above had at least one supermarket in its basement - there you can buy food supplies, water for less than on the street or in the Gothic Quarter.
The souvenir shops inside are quite expensive, but you may want to look around.
Otherwise, it's a typical modern department store, nothing special about it.
Spain is famous for its leather products, which abound at the shops in the Corte Inglés, but prices there are sky high.
Although not beautiful, but interesting, the Corte Inglés building also made it on my list of Barcelona attractions (3rd category attraction).
