My Escapes Malaysia My First Malaysian Escape Kuala Lumpur Contrastful Kuala Lumpur Strange, But [...]

Strange, But Beautiful Architecture in Kuala Lumpur

May 30, 2014
May 10, 2015

It would be a shame to visit only the major attractions of Kuala Lumpur.
The contrast and variety or architectural creations is stunning.
I dug deep to come across some really out of the ordinary buildings...

I had stumbled upon the most unconventional shapes, some of the most wicked buildings that I've ever seen. And together, they form an visual mix like nowhere else...

This is why one requires to spend days, possibly at least a week in order to explore the city thoroughly... Normally, even professional travelers head for the major attractions and don't take the time and effort to sink in...

Having an obsession with architecture, I was dragged in deep. I encountered countless beautiful places, even multiple angles for taking photos of the same buildings and streets.

Kuala Lumpur isn't overall huge, so you can rely on your feet.

It's not a tremendous effort to simply walk on your own two feet and discover the treasures of intricate neighbourhoods.

As mentioned, I've found that Kuala Lumpur offers so many perspectives (not only culturally or in terms of thinking), but also in terms of angles for taking photos.

Normally I don't get to take photos from so many angles and get so many different images. But KL gives me this great opportunity.

Visual contrast is at every step and the city's uneven layout offers me the possibility to enjoy the same place, the same attraction in multiple ways.

...from so many angles and somehow, when looking at my photos later, it seems as if I had been to many more different places.

Among my favourites were the Merdeka Square and Medan Pasar.
It was at the latter where I had come across this shiny golden skyscraper (below, left)...

In early 2014, there were 45 skyscrapers in Kuala Lumpur, which with it scores 13th on a global scale. And this only includes the buildings higher than 150 m.

I think in KL there are well over 100 high-rise buildings, possibly even much more buildings are taller than 50 m.

Quite a performance...

For a city that had a bit over 1.6 million inhabitants only (in 2010), it is a "forest" of high-rise buildings.

Still, I should mention: KL has a metropolitan area of roughly 6.9 million people (!).

I observed a tendency of the localities "melting together". I can foresee a future large metropolis developing.

On the ground, walking in the central areas like the KLCC district, as well as in the old historic areas, it felt rather small.

You can easily walk between KL's main central areas without using the LRT and it won't be "madness" to go sightseeing by foot. The distances are surprisingly short.

KL was exciting just about anywhere I've been and it always had something new to surprise me with.

I kept exploring the Pasar Seni - Medan Pasar - Masjid Jamek - Dataran Merdeka - Little India - Jalan Petaling areas repeatedly. This is where the old core of Kuala Lumpur is found.

Street food stalls, historic buildings in ethnic neighbourhoods and the strongest visual contrast is found in these parts of the city.

I was shooting photos almost constantly... Find a few more below - taken in various parts, but mostly in the old parts...

Agglomerated architecture

Everything is layered, seems chaotic, but it's in fact over-organized.
